Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

We arrived at our volunteer job at A.R.M. Loxahatchee NWR near Boynton Beach, FL on June 4.  Bill worked in the maintenance and I worked in the administrative offices.

We had a funny experience with a raccoon that was a frequent visitor to the dumpster next to the trailer sites.  Bill had the bread maker outside and while the bread was rising, "Rocki" must have smelled the bread and decided to try it.  We found the rising loaf outside of the bread maker on the tuff bin and some small dirty paw prints around the bread maker.  She was very entertaining to watch.

We also saw alligators, many birds, butterflys, dragonflys, and turtles.

We had the opportunity to go out into the Everglades on an airboat with one of the water quality biologists to check water samples.  We even saw a white tail deer (buck) on one of the tree islands.  It was great fun as well as educational.

The Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, visited the refuge while we were there.  This was a big event for everyone at the refuge.

Jupiter, FL

Several miles of Jupiter Island is protected for nesting sea turtles.  We were fortunate to see a Loggerhead sea turtle lay about 2 dozen eggs and them make her way back to the ocean.

White light shows hole she dug to lay her eggs - notice her two flippers

She covered up the eggs with her flappers

The Loggerhead Marine Science Center (hospital for sea turtles) has a museum and several tanks of recovering sea turtles.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, FL

The Merritt Island MWR is near the Johnson Space Center in Titusville, FL.  It's amazing that the island shares two very different entities.

Ponce de Leon Lighthouse, Ponce Inlet, FL

The Ponce de Leon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the Florida coast and is located north of Titusville, FL.  We climbed to the top.
