Historic Washington State Park (near Hope, AR), is a quaint, 19th
century museum village of carefully restored homes and public buildings. In the 1820s and ‘30s Washington was a busy
stop on the rugged Southwest Trail/Old Military Road. After 1840, the town was a bustling
commercial, professional and cultural center.
This was where James Black forged an original Bowie knife for Jim Bowie,
notables such as Jim Bowie, Sam Houston, and Davy Crockett stayed when
traveling to Texas, Arkansas’s Confederate Capital was established after the
fall of Little Rock in September 1863.
